Look, it’s pretty simple, I was just a kid who was 9 about to turn 10 in the summer of 1993 when the movie Jurassic Park was released. Every fiber of my being was primed for its arrival. Hell, I was even reading the novel by Michael Crichton to get my proverbial fix before the movie hit theaters. And then it arrived… and it not only changed my life, it altered my very destiny.
Hyperbole? Perhaps; I am a writer after all. But in this case it is 100% true. Since the summer of JP, I’ve spent 25 years making films and telling stories, and yet this latest project, is the one I feel is my most personal and the one I am most proud of. The idea of making a Haunted Mansion fan-film occurred to me a few years back whilst at the park on an off-season day, when I was able to visit the Mansion 13 times over the course of two days.
As much as I love all the rides at the park, this one is the only one that instantly transports me back to childhood and those halcyon memories of Halloween night and the unforgettableness of it all. The decorations, the costumes, the chilled temperature of the night air, the scary movies on TV, the jack-o-lanterns, candy, witches, ghouls, and goblins; I love all of it now as much as I loved it as a youth. I wanted to tell a story about how I felt as a kid and let it live in the same world as the Haunted Mansion.
To that end, I feel I’ve succeeded. I’ve made something that perfectly captures Halloween nights as they used to exist several decades ago and have begun telling the story of a lonely boy who is faced with the adventure of a lifetime. I hope it resonates with others as much as it does with me.
