“Witch has whole town under spell, as she takes victims the town’s people see this as a sitcom on their home television thinking nothing of it. Only a few are not fooled by this spell.”
So what, I’m just describing the plot of WandaVision, right? Actually no, this was a completely original idea I came up with YEARS ago. Can I prove it? Nope. This was just in my private notes of loglines for things I was probably never going to flesh out to be honest.
Let’s break this all down:
- Isn’t it possible I saw the show first and forgot? Nope, these logline notes are very old, over a decade ago.
- Even though the show came out in 2021, maybe you knew about the comics earlier? I thought the same thing, but A, I don’t read comics, and B, even if I did, apparently the whole “witch traps people in a sitcom” thing was completely original to the TV show and not in the comics.
- Maybe I shared the idea with other writers? Nope, I don’t know any writers in Hollywood and I never shared it with anyone.
- What about multiple discovery? This is genuinely the most likely scenario. While the concept of the show seems highly unique, actually the idea of a witch tricking people + The Truman Show isn’t impossible for multiple people to think is a fun idea, when there are 8 billion people on the planet.
So, what exactly am I saying?
I’m certainly not saying that someone stole my work or even my idea. I wrote a two-sentence logline years ago and never did anything with it and never was going to because I’m too lazy and scared.
Talented writers worked hard to write incredible scripts and I loved the show. I didn’t even remember that I came up with a similar idea while watching the show. Only while dusting off old notes did I find it and have that eerie “what the heck?” moment.
Maybe we’re living in a simulation, maybe we’re all more connected than we realize, or maybe it’s just a coincidence with all the same cultural references and stories permeating the zeitgeist.
