Remember This Skeleton Halloween Decoration?

You probably saw these generally, but there's one specific and pretty dang neat one I want to talk about.

Skeleton Cowboy

You almost certainly have seen one of these die-cut, jointed skeleton decorations on someone’s door at some point in your life, if you don’t own one yourself. There are many like it, but the one you’re probably most familiar with is the Beistle design (seen below).

Beistle Skeleton

While I love this classic design, there is one other design I saw as a kid that always stuck in my mind. I vaguely remember it being on the back of a teacher’s door at school, but wherever I saw it, I stared at that thing for as long as I possibly could. There were so many little details on the skeleton: tattered clothing, a belt, cobwebs, spiders, mice, and bugs.

I was able to track down the design, it’s “Dem Bones” by Amscan from 1979, and I remembered it correctly! While I don’t think the word “Cowboy” actually appears anywhere on the official packaging, if you look closely, that does appear to be what he is. Unlike Beistle, this design seems to have gone out of print decades ago. Though you can usually find it on eBay or Etsy.
