Dead Rising is just one of those games I saw release way back when, thought it looked fun, but just never played it for whatever reason, until now. It always looked like wacky arcade-style fun, and it does have that, but I was surprised to learn that it’s a fully open world game with an interesting time, photography, and fighting system. I would probably describe it as Dawn of the Dead meets Grand Theft Auto/Dead Island.
There’s a surprising amount of things that can change, go wrong, or be missed entirely depending on your play style and the decisions you make along the way, which lead you down different paths with different endings. I’m not a huge fan of playing single-player games multiple times back-to-back, but with Dead Rising, it’s pretty much mandatory or you’ll miss huge portions of the game.
It’s also fun to replay, to a point. At a certain point, you may just want to look up YouTube videos of stuff you missed instead of replaying the same 75% of the game you already played just to get to the remaining 25%.
Besides the obvious similarities to Dawn of the Dead in terms of zombies in a mall, there are more connections, story, score, homages, and Easter eggs that connect the two. Ultimately, it’s the perfect setting for a video game and in many ways, is a kind of fantasy fulfillment. It’s just fun.
I would consider this a must-play game and if you never played the original, may even be worth the full price tag. However, if you played the original, you may want to wait for a discount. If you’re a fan of the original, you may find it a little jarring, as it’s been censored. If you never played it before though, you would never know the difference. It’s still a very graphic game mind you.
