Amanda the Adventurer Review

Do you know what's a silly game?

Amanda the Adventurer

Children’s stories, toys, TV shows, and often children themselves have had the ability to unnerve adults for decades (if not hundreds of years), but I’m not sure exactly when “Evil Kid’s TV Shows” became the trend it is now. Certainly, it’s been around since the creepypasta that inspired Channel Zero at least.

In any case, it’s definitely the perfect setting for a horror game like Amanda the Adventurer, a very small indie puzzle game released by DreadXP, which I had no idea until just now was affiliated with Dread Central (a popular horror site).

The entire game takes place in an attic, where you have to work your way through clues and puzzles to unlock more VHS tapes, both to unravel the mystery and “win” the game (reach the end credits). The game doesn’t do too much to hold your hand and the puzzles can be difficult, not in their complexity necessarily, but in understanding the rules and pitfalls of navigating them.

The game is very much like a “choose your own adventure” type thing, but this isn’t immediately clear, and you may feel overwhelmed, like you’re stuck in a loop, feeling like you’re starting over from the beginning each time you fail. It’s a bit tricky and if you’ve already beaten the game and you never had to look anything up, not even once, I’d love to hear about it. Personally, I had to look up half of the clues to make progress.

The game appears to have become a viral hit with YouTube videos about it reaching millions of views and there’s all kinds of merch available already.

Check it Out

It’s available on all platforms and is worth the low price. I highly recommend.

Amanda the Adventurer 2 is already coming out in just about a week, October 22nd. Unfortunately, it looks like us console kids will have to wait for it to be ported over from PC.
