To be clear, nothing about the following theory necessarily negates any of the other possibilities: that Silent Hill is actually hell or purgatory, that Mary is dead in the backseat of James’ car the whole time, that everyone is dead, buried next to each other in a cemetery, stuck in a loop like ghosts trying to “solve” the mystery of their lives, etc. Everything, everywhere, all at once, is probably true when it comes to Silent Hill.
My focus today is about what Mary/Maria actually is, and in at least one dimension/loop, I don’t think it’s Mary at all or even just James’ guilt or memory of her, but rather a real entity that is manipulating James. It’s all in Mary’s letter:
“I told the nurse to give this to you after I’m gone.“
I think this nurse, whatever he or she is, let’s say a witch for the sake of simplicity, vicariously, through Mary’s love, became obsessed with James. And when Mary gave her the letter, she had her in to try and lure James to Silent Hill and trap him.
She gets inside of James’ head and attempts to be everything she thinks he wanted “Mary” to be, but of course these are just surface-level, superficial things a man may think he wants in a woman in fleeting moments of immaturity, but don’t represent the real need for a true connection.
She tries over and over to gain his affection, which is why she dies over and over in different ways. She’s essentially playing “damsel in distress” to get James to care about her. With this entity’s frustration at being unable to ever please James, she becomes enraged and now wishes to simply destroy him.
