While I’d certainly heard about the game, I didn’t really have any expectations going in. I didn’t even watch a trailer for the game first. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the game is great, charming and enchanting during the day, and absolutely terrifying at night.
It probably goes a long way that my greatest fear is already the ocean, but the tension, atmosphere, creepy sounds, and monsters at night were masterfully done. I really avoided the dark most of the time.
I ended up enjoying the game so much, I 99%ed it. I’d claim 100%, but I didn’t track down every last missing entry in the encyclopedia of ocean life. Other than that, I completed all pursuits and found all the secrets.
The game is comforting in the same way that games like Stardew Valley are, but much darker. I’m a little surprised actually that it’s rated Everyone instead of Teen. Either way, if you’re thinking of letting your little one play, I’d recommend turning on the “Passive Mode” so it’s not such an intense experience.
My highest recommendation to gamers of all types!
