When horror movies are scary, it entirely due to our ability to empathize with those in danger. The more you care about the characters, the more protective of them you’ll be. We should be devastated when our favorite character dies. That’s why my biggest pet peeve in horror is when a film is populated by inyentionally unlikable characters. The rationale is that we’re supposed to cheer for the killer and revel in the creative death scenes. But all it really does is neuter a horror film by divorcing the act of murder from its horrific reality.

Even the best slashers have silly characters that endear themselves to the audience in some way. Hollywood can’t seem to get all the pieces together the way they used to. All hail indihorror!
