Ive purchased a decent number of Scream Factory releases already, and Im planning on putting all my movie money toward them and not mainstream movies which nothing to offer in terms of box or disc art, or their generic special features. Being born in 81′ I recall visiting video stores and being both freaked out and oddly curious about the VHS box art of the horror aisle; A Nightmare on Elm Street was my first horror view at about age 6 and my personal measure of being a man came from that alone. Not until I was a teen was I finally able to watch these more freely. Now in my 30s im all about horror. Keep in mind Shout! Factory puts out lots of old school action/sci-fi gems that are a treat as well. Im looking foward to getting more of Scream’s back catalog :) Thank you for the great article!

I’m so glad Scream Factory has been successful! You’re so right, they really are recapturing the fun, spirit of discovery that VHS offered in the 80s and 90s. I’ve never even seen most of the movies Scream Factory releases, but you best believe I have a hard time resisting buying them anyway. Who would have thought that blu-ray would be more akin to VHS than DVD? I’m also a strong supporter of physical media, and if blu-ray focused companies like Scream are willing to continue to inject their releases with the love and care that they have thus far, then I say it’s well worth the extra money for their releases.

I agree 100 percent. I don’t want my movies in some “cloud” somewhere. I want to pull it off the shelf. Read the back of the box. Admire that cover art. Hold it in my hands. Shout! Factory is keeping that alive. Not only that, but in many cases, we get all new interviews, commentary, and behind the scenes extras… sometimes with the people who made it happen. Like Tom Atkins. I don’t have everything Scream has put out, but I do have a lot. Kudos to them and keep’em comin’.

The find that the UltraViolet & VOD is only good when its part of the deal of buying the physical copy. Yes its convenient now to be able to turn on your mobile device, console or BD Player and watch it, but just like Netflix the titles won’t last forever. Try typing in the very first website and you’ll see its gone, so one day so will the “cloud” stuff, so back yourself up and buy the physical copies, whether you buy a VHS or a DVD or if you can Blu-Ray. Its better to see it in your collection than to one day go on and see that the site is no longer there and that also mean all those titles too. I buy Blu-Rays mainly for the Exclusive bonus features, since I don’t have a HDTV it all looks the same to me. I buy a DVD for the bonus features and if a film is only available as a bare bones release I pick up the VHS than(unless its under 5 dollars) so I don’t want to see it all go digital cause the future generations will be screwed

Great piece. You have got things spot on here John. The sense of wonder is indeed lost in todays age. It took forever for genre films to get here in the UK, but that’s what made it so exciting. The wait. The anticipation. How I long for the days of old..
