I find it interesting that you’d lump those 3 particular films together(The Burning, Friday the 13th 2 and Madman). I actually had to stop and remind myself why such a categorization made sense. (It does, of course). I think it speaks volumes about filmmaking that the 3 movies seem so dissimilar to me, even though the parallels are so obvious. I always regarded The Burning as possibly the most overrated slasher movie ever…Madman as decent, but anemic…and Friday the 13th 2 as a legitimately outstanding movie. If you describe the 3 films, they sound so alike. Watch them, and their own distinct personalities shine through in unmistakable fashion.

I actually prefer this one to the better known Yuletide slashers. The makers of Black Christmas always struck me as being more interested in showing how hip they were than in making a legitimate horror movie. And I found Silent Night, Deadly Night to be overrated, as well(though I DID like it). But To All A Good Night gets two of the classic slasher elements absolutely perfect…the Final Girl, who, as portrayed by Jennifer Runyon, is the sweetest and most beautiful heroine of her kind to ever be featured in a slasher movie…and the setting, in the form of a big, dark sorority house, emblazoned in strategic places with vintage 80’s Christmas decor(including an incredible tree with enormous colored lights and sparkling tinsel)…The film could have used a more memorable killer, and a stronger musical score…but I’d still rank it somewhere around the 11-13 mark among my all-time favorite slasher movies.

Hey Dave. Thanks for reading, and for the comment. Like you said, it’s definitely a slasher that deserves recognition and respect, if only because of the fact that it came before most of the ones we all love.

I’m planning on digging more into the film and maybe doing some interviews, to see if there is indeed an explanation behind the similarities between it and Friday. It just seems crazy to me that they’d be so similar, and that one didn’t somehow steal from the other. To All a Goodnight was made and released in a matter of months, so I suppose it’s possible that the Friday script was obtained and copied.

So good to see a review with some research!!! I can’t count how many reviews I read stating how this is a Friday the 13th rip off or its so cliched. It isn’t fair to knock this for cliches since it came out before the good portion of the 80s slasher films. In that case we could knock Halloween for being cliched right?

I’m in agreement regarding the film. It isn’t a great slasher film, but seeing as its one of if not the first in the wake of the post Halloween slashers of the 80s I also respect it. I wrote a review for,this. Which I’m in the process of rewriting. My first review was based off an out of sync slightly edited for nudity on YouTube!!!! But in it I also mention Silent Night, Deadly Night. Funny how that film came under so much fire and protest and no one bats an eye.

Lastly yeah the whole Friday the 13th connection here is odd to say the least. I wouldn’t be shocked to find out someone from this film or Friday saw a script for the other. Of course odds of that are super slim. Many of these slashers were nearly identical in spots. My Bloody Valentine and the Prowler have nearly identical plots and the Burning and Friday the 13th Part 2 with the campfire scene. Add Madman into the mix even that came out a year after they were either shooting or in the process of shooting.
