UPDATE — I forced myself through another episode and a half to try my best and be fair and I simply cannot continue. It’s agonizing. I definitely concede that it’s probably a great show… for the new generation, but I would definitely like to hear if original fans are into it. I think I’ll create a poll.

Could be wrong, but I believe all they said – in last night’s episode, at least – was that Brandon would wear a surgical mask when leaving the house, to cover his face. But I’m sure they’re going to dig deeper into all of that, in future episodes.

That was a pretty cool twist but I have a feeling the whole Brandon story is just a Red Herring. I also found the cast very unlikable but I am definately not the target audience being almost 50. I’ll give it a few episodes before dropping it but I think I would rather see a movie about Brandon.

The series is definitely geared way more toward teens of today than those who are big fans of the Scream franchise. Which is kind of a bummer, but I suppose you can’t fault MTV for that. I’m sure it’ll be a hit with that audience, and not so much of a hit with big time horror fans. Pretty much what I expected, when this was first announced.

Yeah, normally I’m much more thoughtful and will force myself to continue watching because it is a little unfair to write off a whole TV series based on just the pilot which I’ve done here (against my better nature), but it was just THAT bad that I feel like going for a second helping would be gluttony for punishment. I’d rather go back and just watch the movies (bah humbug haha).

I also suspect that there’s a generational gap here, that possibly the current teenage audience who may have never even heard of or seen the original nor care to, may just absolutely love this show. Maybe it’s done superbly well to accurately relate to teenagers of today?

In any case, good thing I have you. Go forth my canary into the mines and report back after a few more episodes if I should give it another try! :P

I wouldn’t say our opinions are totally opposite on this one, as I agree with almost everything you felt about the episode. It did VERY little for me, and was incredibly cringe-inducing at times, I’m just trying not to judge the whole series based on one episode.

It’s very hard to “review” one episode of a TV series, especially the first one, as it’s a bit like trying to review the first 10 minutes of a movie. I won’t have much of an opinion on this one until I’ve seen a few more episodes, but for now I’m remaining at least a little bit optimistic.

Will I be sticking with it for the whole season? Hard to say. But I’m definitely going to at least be tuning in next week. We shall see!

“Scream? More Like Cringe.” was the header I planned on using for my Scream pilot Bite-sized Horror write-up before you beat me to the punch. :)

However, since you got it covered, a comment should suffice.

I’m actually surprised at how optimistic you are on this one, I thought you were going to tear it a new hole haha. I’m glad to see you at least thought some aspects of it were cringe-worthy, so I’m not completely alone in that feeling, but my cringe meter was through the roof.

I agree, the one part that had me taking a break from cringing was the surprise Brandon backstory moment… at first. But, then it became very clear that this was basically just Jason and Friday the 13th, purposely so I imagine, but feels so out of place for a Scream setting.

Like you, I’m very careful to go in without too many expectations and I don’t ultimately judge something until I’ve actually experienced it ( although I made a lot of predictions that I think I hit the nail on the head with way back in 2013: https://halloweenlove.com/scream-tv-series-likely-to-fail/ ). To be clear, I also don’t think just because I didn’t like this that all the Scream movies are now ruined for me which we’ll be seeing plenty of hyperbole on the internet along those lines shortly I’m sure, if not already. ;)

But, I gave it a try, I really did, and I hate that what I and many others predicted is more or less true, what we have on our hands here is basically a teenage soap opera (and before anyone says it, I don’t think that’s what the original Scream was at all). I understand it’s just the pilot, but I think it was enough to show us this is solely a money-maker project capitalizing on a brand name than caring much about mood or style.

Looking back at what I wrote in 2013 was a little harsh perhaps, but after seeing the pilot, my points are reinforced. I completely forgot about the whole supernatural aspect though, I wonder if that was just a rumor or has long-since been a discarded idea or maybe it will still play a part? In any case, the pilot was so bad for me that I don’t think I’ll be tuning in next week.

If you liked it, awesome. Go forth my little guinea pigs… let me know if it gets any better.

If like me, you’re both a huge Scream fan AND were really disappointed by the pilot, I recommend more than ever now, to checkout The Following which I think captures the whole Scream tone infinitely better than what we’ve seen so far with MTV’s attempt.
