In this genre, especially specific sub-genres like slasher movies and paranormal, ideas and tones are often times very similar. The really good films in sub genres are the ones that pay homage to the classics and remain in tune with them while also revitalizing them and adding their own unique, individual twists. That’s why Insidious works so well, especially in comparison to the Poltergeist remake. It wasn’t a rehash, but a clever throwback that pays respect to Poltergeist while also maintaining its own identity.
