While I’m woefully behind on this year’s releases, I fully agree that horror is as strong as it ever was. My problem is revisiting old favorites and realizing they’re not always as great as I remembered. My favorite era of horror? Right freakin’ now. May it always be so.

Well said. VOD has truly been an amazing thing for movies, and for horror movies in particular. These days, almost all of the good horror is found on those outlets, rather than in the big theaters. And that’s pretty great, because VOD releases are typically way cheaper and you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home and deal with people!

I’ve seen almost all of these or have them lined up to see very soon. Some of them are new favorites especially Digging Up the Marrow. It Follows and Maggie were very good. Even stuff like Zombeavers was really fun. I enjoyed Insidious Chapter 3 well enough too. VOD has become the new drive-in/grindhouse theater. Throughout its history, the horror movie genre has frequently had to survive and thrive in the margins or underground and not in the mainstream cinema. That tradition continues today with VOD being the new venue. I’m thankful for that. Oculus, Poltergeist, and Insidious Chapter 3 are the only horror movies that have played at my local theater so far this year. Living in a rural area in the South, limited releases rarely come anywhere near me. In years past, I would read about indie movies in Fango or elsewhere and have to wait forever (years sometimes) before I could discover them in a local video store or Netflix or whatever. Now, I can see them on opening weekend when everyone in NY/LA/etc. is talking about them thanks to VOD. I wish I could see them on the big screen, but I’d rather see them on VOD than not to get to see them at all. I’m grateful for this new(er) distribution platform. I think it has allowed smaller movies, particularly horror, to thrive in a way that the current Hollywood system otherwise would not allow.
